13-year-old builds his own mini-house in his backyard, look inside and be impressed

Most middle schoolers probably have other things on their minds besides building houses.

But Luke Thill, a 13-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa, is unlike any other middle schooler you’ve seen before.

This talented and proactive boy has crafted his very own little house — in his parents’ backyard.

The project cost him roughly $1,500 USD — and now Luke is living his dream in his little cottage.

Come on in and have a look at what it looks like inside.

I think it’s safe to say that Luke is not like many of his 13-year-old peers. In a time of iPads, smart phones, gadgets and X Boxes, this young man decided to keep himself busy in a different and more ‘old-fashioned’ way. As he explains on his YouTube channel, his desire to build a small house grew out of feeling bored during last summer.

After some thorough researching, Luke had a pretty good idea of how he was going to put his plan into action.

The Process

It took him about a year to get the money and materials he needed to build the house. Luke mowed lawns, started a fund-raiser online and ran errands for anyone who needed help in the neighborhood to make money.

An electrician Luke was friends with helped him install the electricity in exchange for Luke cleaning his garage out, for instance.

Luke used about 75 percent recycled material, many of which were things left over from his grandma’s house. The front door of the house was a gift from an uncle’s friend.

The 89-square-foot house is 10 feet long and 5 1/2 feet wide, with electricity but no plumbing, so no water or bathroom… yet.

“I liked the minimalism,” he told The Des Moines Register. “And I wanted to have a house without a huge mortgage.”

Luke has made several video clips and posted them on online, where he talks about his project as many have grown curious about the little house.

As you can imagine, Luke also received some help from his parents, both financially and with the building itself.

But dad Greg made sure that it would be Luke himself who would pay for most of his project and also build most of it himself.

“It was a chance for a kid to do something more than play video games or sports,” Greg told The Des Moines Register. “It teaches life lessons.”

Teenager’s Dream

The house is in many ways a teenager’s dream, an oasis where you can chill and hang out in. It has a microwave, a TV and a loft with a bed.

There’s even a barbecue and flowers at the back.

Something Horrifying Is About To Happen To The Internet – And You NEED To Pay Attention

Something Horrifying Is About To Happen To The Internet – And You NEED To Pay Attention

The Republican head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ajit Pai, announced this week that the agency will seek to fully repeal Obama-era net neutrality rules. In a statement, he claimed that the Democrats imposed “heavy-handed, utility-style” regulations on the Internet, and they needed to be undone.

“The FCC would simply require Internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that’s best for them and entrepreneurs and other small businesses can have the technical information they need to innovate,” Pai said in a statement, as per The Hill.

The vote on the proposal will take place on December 14, but it’s widely expected to be in support of a full repeal as the FCC is Republican-dominated. The name of this initiative, by the way, is “Restoring Internet Freedom”.

Chairman @AjitPaiFCC proposes to end heavy-handed Internet regulations and restore light-touch approach under which Internet thrived prior to 2015.

Net neutrality, as a basic principle, guarantees that internet service providers (ISP) and government-run agencies ensure that all legal websites are treated equally, and access to them is open to everyone that has a connection to the Web.

Not all countries have it, and Portugal recently made headlines for being a worrying case study of what happens when such laws are circumvented. Although technically bound by the European Union’s net neutrality rules, legal loopholes allow businesses there to sometimes ignore them.

A Lisbon-based telecommunications company took advantage of the government’s lackadaisical attitude and experimented with selling mobile Internet access in tiered packages. The cheapest packages, for example, permit only instant messaging or social media use; only more expensive combinations permit the user to access everything, from emails to music to video streaming and so on.

In effect, with this system, you get a restricted Internet access unless you spend more – something that net neutrality laws would prevent.

Thanks to the Obama administration’s strong support for net neutrality, the US gained some of the best protections in the world back in 2015. It classified broadband as a common carrier under that year’s Open Internet Order, keeping ISPs from cutting off, slowing, or restricting access to the Internet as they see fit.

However, ever since the changing of the guard, the FCC has been seeking to undo these rules, despite nearly 22 million Americans (along with several high-profile Web-based services) writing in to protest such a move.

Taking away  is the Authoritarian dream. Consolidating information into the hands of a few controlled by a few. Dangerous territory. https://twitter.com/pattymurray/status/933053150205960192

As we explain in a previous article, this will turn the Internet into a product more than a utility. This means that companies or individuals willing to pay more will get an Internet service that’s freer, more accessible, and faster in general.

Played out over time, this could create two classes of citizens: one that is rich in money and information, and one that is experiencing a deficit in both. This is exactly what was alluded to by an FCC employee that spoke to reporters over the phone under anonymity.

Last year, the UN Human Rights Council declared that public Internet access should not be disrupted by governments or state-run agencies. The FCC should probably take notice of that.

‘Elf’ Starring Will Ferrell Is Apparently The Best Family Christmas Movie

‘Elf’ Starring Will Ferrell Is Apparently The Best Family Christmas Movie

With nearly less than a month until that festive day rolls around, many families will be gearing up to watch a wholesome Christmas film to keep everyone entertained. It’s an incredibly heated debate around what movie tops the list as being the best for Christmas time, as some reckon the oldies are the best, whereas others are steadfast in their belief that the new ones put a more modern spin on the holiday season.

Well that debate appears to be over with Elf, starring Will Ferrell, voted the best family Christmas film.

Ranker has put the 2003 comedy at the top of the list, followed by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before ChristmasThe Santa Claus starring Tim Allen, A Christmas Caroland Deck The Halls coming in fifth.

Obviously being a list focusing on ‘family’ or PG-13 movies, it means the likes of Die Hard and Bad Santa miss the cut. But it’s surprising that Home Alone and Love Actually don’t even feature in the contest.

Regardless, Elf has been crowned the victor and we must respect the result.

The movie also stars James Caan (Las Vegas) and Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer) and focuses on Will Ferrell’s character Buddy, one of Santa’s elves, who travels from the North Pole to meet his biological father.

via GIPHY

With a budget of $33 million (£25 million), it made more than six times that at the Box Office. Even the tough-to-crack Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 84 percent rating, with the Critical Consensus saying: “A movie full of Yuletide cheer, Elf is a spirited, good-natured family comedy, and it benefits greatly from Will Ferrell’s funny and charming performance as one of Santa’s biggest helpers.”

British television stations caused a bloody outrage last Christmas when it was revealed that not a single channel was showing Elf in the lead up to, or on the festive day.

Naturally, people lost their shit, with one person saying on Twitter: “But it’s not Christmas without Elf!”

Another wrote: “Could 2016 really get any worse?”

That tweet was made on December 19 and the person was yet to find out that, yes, 2016 could get much, much worse when Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and George Michael died in the days leading up to the New Year.

Hopefully TV stations around the UK learned from last year’s serious mistake and will have at least one channel show Elf; especially considering it’s now been crowned the people’s favourite.

If you are going to look at essential oils, you will find that they can actually provide our skin with nourishment to keep it smooth, supple, and fine looking and the best part is that you don’t have to worry about fillers or additional chemicals that can have side effects when used. For those who are looking for essential oils that are good for the skin, here are some that are worth taking note of.

Golden Jojoba. Although this one is not really considered as an oil, the oil is derived from jojoba seeds that are pressed using expellers. The oil is somewhat similar to the sebum that our body produces which makes it easier for the skin to absorb. Among the benefits that Golden jojoba can provide are moisturizing and balancing the skin’s pH levels.

Argan Oil. Also referred to as “liquid gold”, this particular oil hails from the land of Morocco and is packed with proteins, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids that can hydrate your skin until it glows.

Rosehip Oil. Another essential oil that comes highly recommended is rosehip oil as it can help revive your skin, provide you with powerful hydrating properties, and the oil can penetrate deep into your skin for complete moisturizing effects. If your face is constantly subjected to dry air and other environmental stressors, you can nourish your skin once more with this essential oil.

Coconut Oil. Who hasn’t heard about coconut oil? This oil is actually useful not just on your face alone but for your lips, skin, and even your nails. Coconut oil is known to contain fatty acids that reduce water loss so your skin cells remain strong and moist. You can even use it to remove your makeup while nourishing your skin at the same time.

Olive Oil. You might be using olive oil in the kitchen but did you know that you can also use it to treat dry and itchy scalp? This particular oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties that can help alleviate various skin problems. To treat dandruff or itchy scalp, get ¼ cup of olive oil and massage it onto your scalp. Let it sit for 20 minutes before washing and shampooing your hair.

Grapeseed Oil. Grapeseed oil is often used in anti-aging creams because it contains polyphenols which are a type of antioxidants that can combat inflammation. Just add a drop or two of the oil on your morning moisturizer for better results.

Marula Oil. Using oil to fight acne is possible as long as you choose Marula oil. This particular oil contains antimicrobial properties that can combat any bacteria that might trigger acne breakouts. What’s more, since it is lightweight, it won’t clog your pores and it won’t feel heavy on your skin when used.

You can smooth some of the oil on your face in the morning and at night and you can even apply some on the ends of your hair to help nourish it too.

Why Do We Sneeze More than Once in a Row?

Why Do We Sneeze More than Once in a Row?

A sneeze, also known as sternutation, is a normal reaction and there is nothing to be ashamed about it – even when you’re in a public place. However, what if you don’t just once, but you do twice and sometimes thrice? You might think there is something wrong with you. The truth is you’re not the only one in this world with a fickle nose. People sneeze at very strange moments and often, it comes out in twos, threes, or more.

There's more to sneezing than just saying "Excuse me" or "God bless you" / PicHelp
There’s more to sneezing than just saying “Excuse me” or “God bless you” / PicHelp

Why Sneezes Always Seem to Have a Buddy

After your first sneeze, there is another one lurking to follow it. Science can explain this to phenomenon to you. According to experts, it has something with the power behind the blows that come from your nose. In most cases, you sneeze because a particle enters the outer part of your nose and it reaches your nasal mucosa. When this happens, histamines are automatically released, which in turn irritate the nerve cells found inside your nose. The result is you sneeze.

Sometimes, your sneeze is very powerful, so the particle that caused it to be irritated in the first place is expelled. However most of the time, the particle remains in the nostrils, so your nose will force another “achoo” to come out. If you try to analyze what has happened, you can say that the first sneeze didn’t perform well, so you had to sneeze once again. If you keep sneezing, this could mean the irritant is still in your nostrils and your sneezes are not doing a good job at expelling it.

Sneezing is Not Bad

Sneezing is normal and even if you sneeze twice, thrice, or more, you should think of it as a normal reaction. This is because your nose is doing its best to clear the irritant or the foreign particle in your nasal passages. If you have allergies and you often sneeze several times, this means the allergen lingers around. Meanwhile, if you sneeze because of cold, there is usually a longer interval in between every sneeze.

Sneezing without Allergies

If you sneeze five times to 10 times or even more, this could mean your sneezes are too weak to expel the irritant. A forceful sneeze can immediately get rid of the allergen, which is why there are times when you just sneeze once. You can alleviate the problem by simply rubbing your nose or plugging it, which can help remove the irritant manually.

Foods to Avoid When You’re Taking Antibiotics

Foods to Avoid When You’re Taking Antibiotics

antibiotic

Did you know that certain foods and drinks can get in the way of your recovery from an illness as they may hamper the action of antibiotics? No one wants to prolong the agony of being homebound or less productive because of a health issue, and that is why you should take your meds — and mind what you eat and drink as well!

There are all sorts of reasons why the wrong diet can actually reduce the efficacy of the antibiotics you are taking. First, it can interfere with the way your body breaks down the drug. Second, it can slow down the emptying of the stomach, resulting in the decelerated absorption rate of the drug. In some instances, it can actually prevent the absorption of the drug, rendering it ineffective against the problem it was prescribed for.

So the next time your doctor hands you that prescription of antibiotics, remember to ask about which foods and drinks you may take it with — and shouldn’t. The following are some of the things you should momentarily refrain from consuming while popping antibiotics in your mouth:

Dairy

Cheese, sour cream, milk, butter, ice cream — these and other dairy products should not be served on the table while you’re on antibiotics. Calcium present in abundant amounts in these treats can hinder the proper absorption of antibiotics. However, there’s one dairy product that you may still take: yogurt. That’s because it is packed with probiotics that help keep the gut healthy and prevent diarrhea, a common side effect of antibiotics.

Iron-Rich Foods

Just like calcium, iron is known to block the absorption of antibiotics. Chicken liver, red meat, oysters, squash, nuts, dark leafy greens, dark chocolate — try to limit your consumption of these until your course of antibiotics is completed. Are you taking iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron? If so, take them at least 3 hours after you have swallowed your antibiotics to ensure proper absorption.

Alcohol

The truth is alcohol does not have any effect on the breakdown or absorption of antibiotics by your body. So what’s the reason why it is a good idea to steer clear of alcohol while you’re taking antibiotics? Alcohol is said to augment the common side effects of antibiotics, which include dizziness and gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea. So while you are on antibiotics, it’s a great idea to refrain from guzzling down alcoholic drinks.

Citrus Fruits

We all know that eating citrus fruits is a great way to bounce back much faster from a variety of health problems as they are loaded with immune-system boosting vitamin C. However, reaching for them is a no-no if your doctor has instructed you to take antibiotics. That’s because the likes of oranges, tangerines, lemons and most especially grapefruit can have a negative effect on the way your body absorbs antibiotics.

Acidic Foods and Drinks

It’s not just citrus fruits that you should avoid before you’re through with your course of antibiotics, but also anything else that’s acidic. Again, consuming them can keep antibiotics from being properly absorbed, keeping their intake from being fully beneficial. While on antibiotics, stay away from chocolates and anything with tomatoes in them. Certainly, you should refrain from drinking wine, coffee, sodas and even most sports drinks.

High-Fiber Foods

The inclusion of high-fiber foods in your everyday diet is unquestionably good for your body. However, it’s something that you should momentarily sidestep while you are taking antibiotics. That’s because the likes of brown rice, oats, whole-wheat bread, cereals, beans, nuts, corn and leafy greens slow down the rate of your stomach’s emptying, and this causes the absorption rate of antibiotics or any other medication that your doctor has prescribed to decelerate.

4 Foods That Prevent Gas, Flatulence and Stop You From Farting

4 Foods That Prevent Gas, Flatulence and Stop You From Farting

Who hasn’t experienced the awkwardness of letting out a fart at the worst possible time, either in the middle of a meeting or right in front of someone you have a crush on? You simply want to shrivel up and die. It smells bad, it sounds bad, and it’s almost impossible to conceal. But as embarrassing and annoying as flatulence can be, it’s also perfectly natural.

There are home remedies that you can prepare yourself to help reduce your risk of farting, and they really do work. You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen cupboard.

stopfart

Here are 4 Foods that prevent Flatulence

1. Aloe Vera

In addition to being a good treatment for burns, aloe vera gel can ease abdominal pain and reduce the amount of gas. You can consume the gel just as it is or mixes it with hot water to make a tea.

2. Caraway Tea

These seeds are the key to treating any problems involving indigestion and colic. Mix them up in a drink.

Heat 8 oz. of water and bring it to a boil. When boiling, remove it from the heat and add one teaspoon of seeds. Cover it and let it steep for about five minutes. Drink before going to bed.
Ideally, you should drink three cups a day, but don’t push yourself!

3. Garlic

Garlic is also a food that is very beneficial to our health. It improves blood circulation, lowers cholesterol levels and acts as a natural antibiotic. But as if that weren’t enough, garlic stimulates the gastric acids and facilitates digestion, which helps prevent flatulence. You can consume it in any form, but this recipe with cumin is particularly good at preventing farts.
Peel three cloves of garlic and cut them in half. Put water, pepper, cumin, and garlic in a saucepan and turn on the heat. Let it boil for five minutes and then remove it from the heat and let it stand for five minutes. Now filter it and drink it at room temperature three times a day.

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon reduces the swelling of the stomach, thus preventing the formation of gas. It’s also very easy to ingest: you can simply add it to some milk and drink it.
Heat 8 oz. of milk in a saucepan until it boils. When it’s hot enough, add a teaspoon of cinnamon, stir and turn off the heat. Drink this mixture every night before going to bed. And if you prefer, you can add a little honey to the mixture to sweeten it.
